Know Your Server: Anne Tyler, Server at SOHO KITCHEN & BAR

Anne Tyler first started working in the service industry when she responded to a post from Momo-cho restaurant on Craigslist looking for a busser. She had recently returned to Cleveland from spending a year abroad in Korea after graduating from Ohio University. Anne used her English degree to teach English as a second language there, then spent sev-eral months traveling before returning home. After coming home without any money, she took the job at Momocho as a busser and worked her way up to being a server and bartender. A native of Lakewood, she soon became interested in living in Ohio City. For the past two years, she has been a local resident.

Have you worked at SOHO since they first opened?

SOHO opened on November 17th, just over a year ago, and I came a few weeks later. I still work at Momocho a couple of nights a week as a hostess.

How did you find out about the job at SOHO?

I was working at Momocho, and I came in to have dinner. Molly Smith, the co-owner, offered me a job.

I heard that SOHO was effected by Hurricane Sandy a few weeks ago. What happened?

We lost all of our food when the power was out. The power went out on Monday; we didn’t open back up until Friday for dinner.

What is your favorite item on the menu at SOHO?

The Coral Gables: tequila, passion fruit, OJ and pomegranate grenadine.

What else do you have going on?

I’m getting my Masters degree in Clinical Counseling from Cleveland State University.

Do you know what you want to do with your degree?

I volunteer at the Cleveland Rape & Crisis Center. I’d like to work for a non-profit. I’m interested in work-ing to empower women and teenage girls.

What is your favorite brunch in Ohio City?

Le Petit Triangle or Bonbon.

Do you have a favorite stand at the West Side Market?

I like Maha’s Falafel or Orale if I’m cooking.

If you were going to start your own local Ohio City business, what would it be?

Oh, I can’t reveal it. It’s really good though.

What do you think Ohio City needs?

I’d like to see a music venue. Right now, the Beach-land Ballroom is my go-to. I would like to see more retail. And a gym!

After living here for two years, what do you like about Ohio City?

I like that it really feels like home and that it is truly beautiful during any season. I like the colorful houses. I don’t have to leave the neighborhood very often.
