History
Founded in 1818 as the "City of Ohio" and part of Brooklyn Township, Ohio City became an independent municipality on March 3, 1836, just before Cleveland's incorporation. It was annexed by Cleveland on June 5, 1854. Despite its smaller population, Ohio City and Cleveland were economic rivals, notably in shipbuilding and canal traffic, with the 1836 "Battle of the Bridge" exemplifying this competition.
Renamed the "Near West Side" upon annexation, Ohio City attracted migrants from New England, Germany, Hungary, and Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawn by job opportunities. The West Side Market, established in 1912, became a central community hub. After World War II, the neighborhood faced decline but saw significant revitalization from 1963 to 1978, with over $30 million invested in restoring more than 100 structures. By then, Ohio City was home to 25,000 people representing 15 ethnic groups. The redevelopment, driven by middle-income households rediscovering the area, has included commercial and residential improvements, a revitalized West Side Market, and new condominiums and retail developments.
